20th March 2015 at 9:33am was a day long remembered in Leeds for me, as we had a near total Solar Eclipse…another ‘Bucket List’ photography moment. It was an event I’ve had on my radar for a quite some years, ever since I discovered it on the Nasa Eclipse website, where they had a great map showing it’s path across the UK with its totality over the Faroe Islands and the Yorkshire region enjoying a 90% eclipse. I had looked into travelling to the Islands and also the northern tips of Scotland but decided I wanted to witness it in my hometown, which I’m so glad I did as Scotland and the Islands had dense cloud cover. Instead I opted for finding a high vantage point within the city and having done quite a few scouting missions to find the right spot and angle for some nice views across Leeds, I found the Leeds General Infirmary was that ideal spot for me and went about getting permission through lots of emails to use their Roof Garden which I’m greatly thankful for.

On the actual day I’d got in work quite early, allowing me to take a few hours break of my own time to capture the event, but like Scotland, Leeds also had a cover of cloud, but it wasn’t thick enough to stop us getting a great view of the solar eclipse through some lovely breaks in the clouds. As 9:33 approached the skies greyed and a dawn-like chill came into the air as the moon crossed in front of the sun, and just at that moment the clouds thickened with only a few glimpses of the eclipse through breaks in the cloud.

Grand Old Leeds
eaOne of the very first WordPress Photo Challenge I ever participated in was “Big” so it seems quite fitting I start doing the Photo Challenges again after nearly a 4 month break with the theme “GRAND”. The photo’s I’m submitting is of the Leeds Skyline on a very cold night.
I’d managed to sweet talk the security team looking after the City Island residential scheme, on the edge of the city to let me use one their apartments for some night photography. Amazingly he gave me the keys to the empty Penthouse suite ‘Room 102’ on the 19th floor, not ideal for those afraid of heights like me, but I was prepared to overcome this fear in the faint hope of getting some nice shots of the city at night.
Earth Shine Leeds
This long panorama included the Crescent Moon on the far right with a lovely glint of Earth Shine.
Had to include a B/W shot, as it makes the city lights look so sharp.
I’ve made ALL the images a Gallery Link, so you can see the detail better.
Hope you like them 🙂
I’m late again to the party for submitting to the ‘A Word A Week Photo Challenge’ …but for good reason…as with this week’s theme being such a favourite photographic subject of mine ‘CLOUDS’ I didn’t just want to submit historical shots (which I have hundreds) …instead I decided to take some new and more immediate shots of clouds from when the challenge started. Worryingly the weather has been so dull and grey in Leeds, which you’ll see from my photo called Grey Landscape, I thought I might have submit old shots, but luckily we had one sunrise and a sunset yesterday that proved perfect for the theme….
I hope you like them.

Stop with the Silhouettes!!
There’s very few ‘perfect’ vantage points to take photographic vistas of the Leeds Skyline, I can count on one hand the various locations and one of them is my bathroom window, which now has its own hashtag on Instagram #privypics. So I’m always on the look out for that perfect spot for picturesque sunset photography, which I finally seem to have found a few minutes drive away from the house the other week…..enjoy the pics from the last three visits to ‘My Vantage Point’
