The Spacecraft and Vehicles of Rogue One

I’m loving the new modified vehicles and spacecraft in Rogue One, especially the Tie Striker and AT-ACT, and Fathead have released some super hi-res images of these new ships and vehicles.

This ‘New’ TIE Striker is new  streamlined variant of the TIE line starfighters used by the Galactic Empire for in-atmosphere engagements and the defense of important Imperial bases. Though designed for atmosphere, it can also function in space and accompany traditional TIE fighters. Equipped with advanced high-speed wings, it is faster than the standard TIE/LN starfighter and has an extra pair of laser barrels

Next up is the All Terrain Armored Cargo Transport (AT-ACT) which is a larger version of the standard All Terrain Armored Transport combat walker which features a dedicated cargo bed for the transportation of heavy building materials or combat munitions. It is deployed at major Imperial construction projects, such as shipyards and sprawling research installations.

But the ultimate Star Wars space ‘vehicle/ship/station’ is the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon: a moon-sized space station with the ability to destroy an entire planet. But the Emperor and Imperial officers like Grand Moff Tarkin underestimated the tenacity of the Rebel Alliance, who refused to bow to this technological terror…

This Christmas time we’ll be heading back to a galaxy far, far away, and as usual Empire Magazine could hardly let this new Star Wars movie slip past without letting it grace their front cover. So here it is: the first of their Rogue One ‘A Star Wars Story’ covers, in all its rebellious glory (first revealed exclusively by the Star WarsUK Twitter feed).

The cover includes Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, Diego Luna’s Captain Cassian Andor, Riz Ahmed’s Bodhi Rook, Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe, Jiang Wen’s Baze Malbus, and Alan Tudyk’s droid character K-2SO.

And although there’s not anything particularly exciting about this specific image, hopefully the two more covers the magazine will show us more, they do promise “unprecedented access to the war film transforming the Star Wars universe,” …fingers crossed

The Return of Biggs Darklighter…?

2016 is the year we have a new ‘Star Wars Story’ film to look forward too, the gritty Rogue One by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters) which tells the story of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star.

For me the bit that intrigues me the most is the resemblance between Diego Luna‘s character and Biggs Darklighter from Star Wars : A New Hope, same build, same hair and ‘that’ same signature mustache.

The backstory of Biggs Darklighter (played by Garrick Hagon) had a much larger role in early edits of the film, which told the story of him graduating from the Imperial Academy and returning home to Tatooine for a visit to Anchorhead’s Tosche Station, where he swapped tales with his best friend from boyhood Luke Skywalker about buzzing Wamp Rats in their T-16 SkyHoppers and threading the stone needle down Beggar’s Canyon. That was until the conversation turned serious and Biggs told Luke he was made first mate on the Rand Ecliptic, but was  going to jump ship once he reached the Central Systems and meet up with a friend on the Planet Bestine and make contact with the Rebel Alliance…more on the Mutiny on the Rand Ecliptic can found here.

In the Expanded Universe, which isn’t canon anymore, Biggs actually trains as an Imperial pilot, and while he is there, he hears the first rumors and rumblings of the Death Star’s construction. After participating in a mutiny on his Imperial starship, and going AWOL to join the Rebel Alliance, he is actually part of the Rebel’s first missions to steal R2 units and X-Wing Fighters. While these stories are no longer officially part of Star Wars lore, certain threads could very well have been mined for Rogue One.

So are we seeing a Rogue One character who survives the film’s mission to steal the Death Star plans and then meets up with Luke Skywalker on Tatooine at Tosche Station, to then ultimately die at the hands of Darth Vader in the rebels assault on the Death Star. This would be such a sweet nod to the original film in which most of the scenes with Biggs was deleted.
