Star Wars 360

Speed across the Jakku desert from Star Wars: The Force Awakens with this brilliant and immersive 360 experience created exclusively for Facebook

Facebook just rolled out 360-degree videos for your newsfeed, and the trailblazing clip is a stunner. The Facebook page for Star Wars just posted exclusive 360 footage of a speeder cruising across the Jakku desert—right by that downed Star Destroyer from the Battle of Jakku.

You can watch this Star Wars vid, and other videos like it, in a couple of ways. At a desktop, you can just drag around with a mouse. On your mobile and tablets you can point and twist it in different directions to change the angle of the video, making it feel totally immersive. The most exciting part is presumably once Facebook-owned Oculus puts out Oculus Rift, we’ll be able to use that technology in the work place for architectural and graphics presentations.

Although this 360 video is new to Facebook, it’s not to the world. YouTube has been doing 360 video for a while now, and even worked with GoPro to make a rig for shooting it. That said, this Star Wars clip is a real trailblazer.
