Lumia Architecture

Through work I do a monthly photographic submission to our corporate newsletter, which I follow a set theme of looking at Architecture from a ‘non-architectural’ perspective. Also it has to be one of the buildings designed by the Architectural division within the design company I work for, one of the months I chose their award-winning educational building called Stage@Leeds, part of the School of Performance and Cultural Industries situated within the University of Leeds.

But that month, rather than use the trusty camera, I turned to the Nokia Lumia 925 again, which I’d used on a previous post called Lumia Landscapes that got me featured on Nokia’s website. For this venture I decided to use the new photo app called ‘Oggl’ from the same people who developed Hipstamatic Classic, similarly like that one, you can choose from lots of various creative film stocks and lens/photographic paper styles which can create endless possibilities.

…it’s a bit like Instagram, but with a more photographic twist…

I visited to the Stage@Leeds over various days and captured countless images using lots of styles until I found one which I felt captured my ‘non-architectural’ criteria, it was an infra-red film stock called Alfred lens called Jimmy.

The Gorge at Roundhay

Great Heads Beck at Roundhay Park

I’ve done other posts on the beauty of my local Roundhay Park and it’s walks, but I never thought I’d go there and find a hidden gem of a walk I’ve never ventured before. Most visitors tend to stick to the lakes and walk around it feeding the many swans, ducks and geese, or relax in the tranquil and wonderful lakeside cafe with a tea and scone…which is a gem in itself. But we seldom ever venture deeper into the woods, but recently Wifey and I did just that with the dog, into area called The Gorge. This area is somewhat hidden behind the Castle Keep to the north of Waterloo Lake, but it does offer one the most beautiful loop walks at Roundhay with the Great Head’s Beck running through it with countless wooden footbridges crisscrossing it as you venture through the Gorge. It eventually leads you to the most quaint Yorkshire stone bridge at its pinnacle.

Dogs Mouth Spring.

For me…the gem of this walk was its hidden Dogs Mouth ‘natural’ Spring …the water tasted like no water I’ve ever tasted before, sharp, clean and so fresh with its lovely icy tinge… Cleansing for the liver I’m sure.

Light Speed over Westminster Bridge

Long exposure photography is quite a passion of mine at the moment, and recently I got the chance to practice this in some of the most iconic places in London.

The one below is a particular favourite of mine, as like The Shard of Light, this one also has a great constellation in the night sky, which is Ursa Major on the right of St Paul’s Cathedral… you may need to click on image to get the large-scale version.

Another subject I like to explore is panoramas, so having the chance to do some of these in London wasn’t an opportunity I was going to miss…

Poetry for the Moon

For me there’s nothing more captivating than the site of a bright full moon,  in late 2013 our skies were illuminated with a stunning Moon in the 3rd and Final Act of the much bigger and brighter moon otherwise known as a Supermoon , which occurs when it is closest to the earth during its elliptical orbit. If you didn’t get a chance to see this wondrous phenomenon due to the extremely cloudy conditions on that night…fear not, I managed to captured the event, but only briefly due to the impending storm. Now you may think why I’ve called this post  ‘Poetry for the Moon’ , well… I posted the above image on my Twitter account and it caught the eye of NASA Astronaut Douglas Wheelock who re-tweeted it to his followers.

Two of his followers Claire McCartney and Edit Koczó got inspired to respond with Poems they thought the image evoked…

The best one Claire mentioned was a prophecy Leonardo Da Vinci spoke of, and I know we sometimes need a bit of artistic latitude for prophecies to come true, especially as this one he foresees the Moon Landings with the Big Bird representing the ‘eagle’ has landed…”I love this interpretation of his prophecy”  

The big bird will take its first flight, filling the universe with amazement, Filling all the chronicles with its fame, and bringing eternal glory to the nest where it was born.

So inspiring…

While I’m on the subject of captivating Moon shots …Again! You groan 😉 Sorry, you see the shot below was no exception, even though I didn’t manage get the plane crossing the face of moon like I’d done previously, the aeroplanes Jet Stream still created a great shot to capture… another shot that caught the eye of Douglas, Clare & Edit
